Jet ski models and power: which to choose?

By alquilarmotodeagua.es · Updated in 2026 · ~5 min read

Yamaha FX, Sea-Doo GTI, Kawasaki... and horsepower ranging from 60 to over 300. If you are going to rent, you do not need to be an expert, but understanding the basics about models and power helps you choose the right ski for your level.

The three big brands

The market is dominated by three manufacturers: Yamaha (WaveRunner), Sea-Doo (Bombardier) and Kawasaki (Jet Ski). All three are reliable; the differences for a one-off rental matter less than the power and the condition of the ski. We compare them in Yamaha vs Sea-Doo vs Kawasaki.

Power: how many horsepower do I need?

Power and license

Power affects whether you need a license. More powerful skis and free riding usually require a license (PER or other). For instructor-led outings it is normally not needed. We explain it in PER vs no license.

Seats: 1, 2 or 3

Most rental skis take 2 seats, and some up to 3. If you are going with a passenger, confirm the capacity and maximum weight, especially if there are two adults.

Which ski to choose to start

If you are starting out, a mid-power ski (110-130 hp) in calm waters is ideal: enough fun without stress. Leave the 300 hp ones for when you are confident. And before your first outing, read the beginner guide.
