Posidonia: the treasure we tread on without seeing it

Posidonia is a marine plant (not an algae) that forms extensive meadows in the Mediterranean. It is essential: it produces oxygen, shelters countless species, keeps the water clear and protects beaches from erosion. The problem is that it grows very slowly and is very sensitive.

Although posidonia mainly concerns the anchoring of boats, as a sea user it is worth knowing about it and respecting the marked and protected areas. Riding with awareness of what is under the water is the first step to caring for it. It is especially relevant in destinations like the Balearics, where these meadows are very present.

Respect the swimming areas and swimmers

The golden rule is to stay away from swimming areas. Beaches are usually marked and there is a minimum safety distance that must always be respected, both for swimmers and for you.

• Do not enter or ride inside the marked swimming areas.
• Slow down and take extra care near the coast.
• Move far enough away before accelerating or doing manoeuvres.
• Watch out for swimmers, snorkelers and small craft, which are harder to see than you think.

Look after marine wildlife

The sea is full of life and our presence should not disturb it. If you come across dolphins, turtles, seabirds or shoals of fish, the ideal thing is to slow down, keep your distance and not chase them. Approaching at high speed stresses them and can be dangerous for everyone.

• Do not chase or harass any animal.
• Moderate your speed if you spot wildlife nearby.
• Avoid areas with a known presence of sensitive species.

Noise, fuel and waste

Responsible riding also takes care of the details. Excessive noise disturbs wildlife and those enjoying the calm, so avoid unnecessary revving near the coast. As for fuel and oils, refuelling carefully and checking the ski is in good condition prevents spills.

• Do not throw anything into the water: no plastics, no cigarette butts, no food scraps.
• Take your rubbish with you, and any you find if you can.
• Refuel carefully so as not to spill fuel.
