Guided tour or free rental: which suits you?

By alquilarmotodeagua.es · Updated in 2026 · ~5 min read

When it comes to renting a jet ski you have two main options: joining a guided tour or renting on your own. Each has clear advantages depending on your experience, your budget and what you want to experience. We help you decide.

The guided tour (usually no license)

On a guided tour, an instructor leads the route and you follow. You do not need a license, it is ideal for beginners and it takes you to the best spots without you having to know the area or the navigation rules.

Free rental (with a license)

With free rental you ride at your own pace within the permitted area. It gives much more independence, but usually requires a license, a deposit and knowing the buoys and protected areas.

Price: which works out better?

Guided tours usually have a fixed price that includes more services. Free rental can work out better value by time, but you have to add fuel and a deposit. We break it down in how much it costs to rent a jet ski.

And the license?

This is the deciding factor for many people. If you do not have a license, the guided tour (or no-license rental with an instructor) is your option. We explain it in depth in the PER vs no license comparison and in jet ski without a license.

Our recommendation

If it is your first time or you do not know the area, start with a guided tour: you learn, enjoy and stay safe. Once you have experience (and a license), free rental will give you maximum freedom. Either way, first check the first-time guide.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, a guided tour or renting freely?

For beginners or those without a license, the guided tour is the most advisable: you stay safe and discover the best areas. Free rental gives more freedom, but requires a license and experience.

Does the guided tour need a license?

Usually not. As you are accompanied by an instructor, guided outings can generally be done without a boating license.

Which is cheaper?

It depends. The tour has a fixed price with more services included; free rental can work out better by time, but you have to add fuel and a deposit.
