Summary. All three brands are reliable. Yamaha is the most versatile and the most rented in Spain. Sea-Doo stands out for technology (ECO mode, iBR brake) and comfort. Kawasaki is the fastest in stock and the favourite for freeride. For tourist rental you will mostly try Yamaha or Sea-Doo.
The three brands, in context
The world personal watercraft market is dominated by three manufacturers that share more than 95% of sales: Yamaha Motor (Japan), BRP/Sea-Doo (Canada) and Kawasaki Heavy Industries (Japan). Each has a different design philosophy and target audience. In Spain, tourist operators buy mostly Yamaha and Sea-Doo because they are the most reliable under intensive use (200+ hours/season).
Yamaha WaveRunner
WaveRunner — the most versatile
Yamaha is the brand you will probably rent in Spain. Its range goes from the EX Sport (no license, ~110 hp) to the FX SVHO (250 hp, premium). The mid-range "TR-1 HO" engine is legendary for durability: rental fleets run them 5-6 seasons with no major changes.
- Fuerte
- Reliability, after-sales in Spain, wide range, stable hull
- Débil
- Less technology than Sea-Doo in the mid range
- Ideal for
- Alquiler turístico, principiantes, uso intensivo
- Modelos comunes en España
- EX Sport, VX Cruiser, GP1800R, FX Cruiser SVHO
Sea-Doo (BRP)
Sea-Doo — the most high-tech
Sea-Doo introduced the iBR (Intelligent Brake & Reverse) system: electronic brake and reverse. Today it is standard across its range and revolutionised handling — especially in harbours and when launching. The RXT-X 325 is one of the most powerful skis on the market. The GTI range (no-license version) is very popular for rental.
- Fuerte
- iBR (electronic brake), riding modes (ECO/Sport/Touring), seat comfort
- Débil
- More electronics = more things that can fail; pricier after-sales
- Ideal for
- Long touring, couples, trips with luggage, island routes
- Modelos comunes en España
- GTI 130, GTI SE, GTX 170, RXT-X 325
Kawasaki Jet Ski
Kawasaki — the fastest (and rawest)
Kawasaki invented the original "Jet Ski" (even the name is their registered trademark). Today its range is smaller but the Ultra 310LX is the fastest stock ski on the market (over 110 km/h). In Spain they are less common in rental because Kawasaki bet more on freeride/stand-up than touring, and that fits less with the tourist who wants to sit down and enjoy.
- Fuerte
- Top speed, the most powerful engine on the market, sporty feel
- Débil
- Less comfort in touring, short range, less rental availability in Spain
- Ideal for
- Freeride, experienced riders, owners chasing speed
- Modelos comunes en España
- STX-160, Ultra LX, Ultra 310LX (en pocos operadores premium)
What will you actually rent?
At 90% of Spanish tourist operators you will find:
- No license (75 hp): Yamaha EX Sport or Sea-Doo GTI 130. The two most widespread in rental. Indistinguishable in a normal tourist experience.
- With PER (130-170 hp): Yamaha VX Cruiser, Sea-Doo GTX 170. Comfortable touring, real 2-3 seats.
- Premium (200+ hp): Yamaha FX SVHO or Sea-Doo RXT-X 325. Few operators have them, high price.
Use-case comparison
For one hour in a marked area (tourist)
The brand does not matter. No-license skis (75 hp) feel very similar. What matters is the condition of the ski, not the brand: ask the operator the age of the model (ideally under 3 years).
For a 2-3 hour route as a couple
Sea-Doo GTX wins on comfort: wider seats, better suspension, ECO mode saves fuel. The Yamaha FX SVHO is a solid alternative but a bit stiffer.
For freeride/jumps/waves
Yamaha GP1800R or Kawasaki Ultra. A more reactive hull, better for sporty use.
For a large group (3 people)
All three brands have 3-seat models, but the Yamaha VX Cruiser is the most stable with two passengers + rider.
The honest verdict
If you are renting for a holiday or a stag/hen do, do not obsess over the brand. The real difference between a Yamaha EX and a Sea-Doo GTI in 1 hour of tourist rental is minimal. What changes your experience is:
- The condition of the ski (age, maintenance)
- The operator (serious briefing, professional instructor, equipment)
- The sea conditions (more than the brand)
When you get serious (PER + frequent use), then yes: try each brand and decide which suits you. Until then, rent whichever you get and enjoy.
