How to ride a jet ski: first steps

By alquilarmotodeagua.es · Updated in 2026 · ~5 min read

Getting on a jet ski for the first time is a little intimidating, but the good news is that learning the basics is easier than it looks. With a few minutes of explanation and a couple of practice runs, most people feel comfortable straight away. In this guide we go over the first steps to ride a jet ski safely and enjoy it from minute one.

Before you start: the essentials

It all starts on land. Before heading out, make sure your life jacket is properly on and clip the safety lanyard (the kill cord) to your wrist or life jacket: if you fall, the engine stops automatically. Listen carefully to the company's instructions, because every ski has its quirks.

So you do not forget anything, take a look at our jet ski what-to-bring checklist.

The throttle is your main control

Here is the key point that surprises almost everyone: a jet ski turns thanks to the jet of water it expels, and that jet depends on the throttle. In other words, to turn effectively you need to apply throttle while moving the handlebars. If you release the throttle completely, you lose much of your steering ability.

That is why, faced with an obstacle, the instinct to let off the throttle can work against you. The right thing is to keep some throttle and turn the handlebars towards where you want to go. Practise this feeling at low speed until it comes naturally.

Starting and first manoeuvres

Once on the water, start gently. Apply throttle gradually, without jerks, and let the ski gain stability: the more controlled speed you carry, the steadier it feels. At very low speed the ski is more unstable, so do not be alarmed if it wobbles at first.

Balance, posture and falls

Posture helps a lot. Keep your knees slightly bent to absorb the waves, your back relaxed and your weight centred. If there are two or three of you, the person behind should follow the movement smoothly.

Falling is completely normal and part of the fun. If it happens, do not panic: the lanyard will have stopped the engine. To climb back on, always do it from the rear of the ski, where there is usually a handle or step, and never from the side.

Frequently asked questions

Is it hard to ride a jet ski?

Not too much. With the company's initial explanation and a few minutes of low-speed practice, most people get the hang of it quickly. The important thing is to understand that you turn by applying throttle and to start calmly.

Why do you have to accelerate to turn?

Because the ski is steered by the jet of water coming out of the rear, and that jet depends on the throttle. If you release the throttle completely, you lose much of your turning ability.

What do I do if I fall in the water?

Relax, it is common. The safety lanyard stops the engine automatically. Always climb back on from the rear of the ski, using the handle or step, never from the side.

Do I need prior experience to rent?

It is not essential. Many companies offer beginner options, with instructions and even an instructor. Mention it when booking so they assign you the right model and type of outing.
